2017 was very challenging throughout the growing season up until harvest. We were very fortunate in that we had a good September to push the corn along to maturity. Harvest started in most areas 2 to 3 weeks behind schedule, with a measurable snow in areas on November 1. Harvest, for the most part, on corn and soybeans is complete. You may see a cornfield here or there in your travels. This is the latest I have seen soybeans harvested in many years with the last fields being harvested the second or third week of November:
Soybeans - In many areas of both Minnesota and Wisconsin soybeans were average to the previous year to slightly above average in some locations. Diseases roared their ugly head in some cases to put yields below average in some areas of the states. LG Seeds soybean lineup is very strong, with our new Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® varieties pushing the Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans out of the way in many plots. Top performers are the C1870R2 and C2126RX.
Corn - Remarkable yields for the growing season we faced. Reports from all areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin were above average on yields. After completing plot data, it seems as though our new corn varieties are pushing to the top in both states. LG5499 and LG5470 genetics were very strong and are still lead varieties in most areas of both states. LG5494 and LG5505 are dominant new hybrids for 2018. I can’t wait to see both varieties on a larger scale.
Field work and fall fertilizer applications have come to an end with at least 90% of the acres covered with some type of tillage equipment. Dealers and DSM’s are working hard to get customer orders completed.
Happy Holidays from the Minnesota and Wisconsin Region
