Northern Illinois Crop Progress

by Steve Crafton | Dec 18, 2017

Most of the crops are out and field work complete in a lot of counties in Northern Illinois.  The season we experienced was quite variable in temperatures and rainfall but overall crops were better than expected.  We started out cool and wet with spring planting which led to a lot of replant.  August was unseasonably cool with temperatures in the upper 70’s for highs versus the upper 80 to lower 90 degree temperatures we usually experience.

September came and we made up for the cooler temperatures in August with above average temperatures which helped the crop mature.

Corn in most of our region was better than expected. Even some of the later replant corn was yielding better than corn planted early which hardly ever happens.  One thing that I feel helped us achieve those higher yields was the cool August we had.  Corn had pollinated and grain fill was accruing.  Most of the time we experience upper 80’s and lower 90’s during this time which can lead to shallow kernel’s or even aborted kernels on tip.  This year the corn was able to fill those kernels and rest at night.  This led to good kernel fill and depth of kernels.  LG5525, LG5565, LG5548, LG5606, LG5618, LG5643 and LG5650 all had a good year in our region.

Soybean crop was good in most areas but I think with the temperatures in August and catching a couple rains in August some farmers thought whole field averages might be a little better.  Don’t get me wrong, we had some whole field averages with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans in our central southern region running in the upper 70’s and 80’s.  Our north central region had a lot of good whole field averages with LibertyLink® soybeans as well.  C2888RX, C3026RX, C3489RX, C3550RX and C3775RX each had a good year for Xtend® soybeans.  C2635LL, C2898LL, C3344LL, C3776LL and C3904LL all had good years for LibertyLink® soybeans.
