How to do a yield estimate ahead of harvest

The Pro Farmer crop tour has made its rounds and published the yield estimates for the year. But the yield estimate for your state likely isn’t an accurate picture of the yield you'll see in your fields. Here’s how to do a “pro farmer style” yield estimate in your fields, so you know what to expect on the yield monitor at harvest.

Gathering your yield estimate numbers

  1. Walk into the field at least 35 paces beyond the end rows.
  2. Make note of your row spacing, or measure the row width in inches if you don’t know it.
  3. Measure 30 feet down the row.
  4. Count the ears on the two rows within the 30 feet. Find the average number of ears on these two rows. Make note of this number.
  5. Take three random ear samples. To keep it random, the pro farmer group collects the 5th, 8th and 11th ear.
  6. Measure the average length of grain on each ear in inches and find the average between the three ears. Make note of this number.
  7. Count the number of kernels around on each ear and find the average between the three ears. Make note of this number.

How to do the yield calculation

  • (Average number of ears/30 feet) * (Average rows around) * (Average ear length) = X
  • X / Row Width = Bushels per acre yield estimate
