LG Seeds Means Business about Safety

When it comes to safety – LG Seeds means business. LG Seeds is proud to feature safety every day, but especially during harvest.

At LG Seeds, we continuously strive to improve our safety culture and provide a safe work environment for all employees. The most valuable resource we have is our people and we want to make sure each person goes home safely and in a healthy condition at the end of the day.

To demonstrate the importance of safety to not only our employees but those we interact with, AgReliant has established safety as a core value. Safety as a core value establishes our commitment to protect the health and well-being of our employees, our contractors, our customers, and the communities in which we operate.

Promoting a positive safety culture and employee engagement is no easy task. You can’t just flip a switch and expect employees to buy-in to safety. Building a positive culture within the organization and engaging employees to choose safe actions on the job, on the road and at home also requires a firm commitment by the organization, time to implement changes and multiple efforts.

Employee participation, being creative and making safety fun is one of key components of engaging employees in safety. One way we have encouraged participation is through safety contests. The Health and Safety Program slogan, Safety Cultivates Success, is a result of an employee contest developed to update the program slogan and encourage participation. Employees also had a chance to submit and vote on short safety videos for the topic of avoiding slips, trips and falls during a video contest.  To get employee families discussing safety, AgReliant sponsored a safe driving poster contest with prizes for children and grandchildren of employees. Safety features and quizzes are also regularly utilized to promote safety awareness and encourage participation.

Celebrating group and individual safety successes, participation and safe performance is essential to the success of AgReliant Genetics and is reinforced on a regular basis. To facilitate recognition, each AgReliant location and Brand establishes specific safety goals and recognition based on leading indicators and participation. Recognition goals also include annual safety projects that may involve a safety improvement, promotion of safety awareness within the location, brand or community, or promotion of off-the-job safety for employees, customers or families. Examples of some past annual projects include fire extinguisher training and health fairs for employees and family members and providing safety Halloween kits for kids during a trunk or treat event.

Improving our safety program and work environment is a continuous process. Employees are experts at doing the jobs in their areas and have great ideas and suggestions for safety. AgReliant actively encourages employees to report safety suggestions that can improve the safety program, hazards that may cause injury or property damage, and any near miss incidents that have occurred. AgReliant provides channels to report safety items verbally, by email or online through an incident management program.

A cross functional, initiative-focused group, the Corporate Safety Council, is used to develop and drive continuous safety improvement. The Council meets to review past initiatives, evaluate potential initiatives, determine priorities and put actions in place to facilitate and encourage safety engagement and continuous improvement of safety for our employees, customers and families. Recent initiatives have included observation of Safe + Sound Week and National Safety Month, distribution of farm safety information at the Farm Progress Show, formation of an LG Sales Safety Team to drive brand-specific safety efforts and an evaluation of telematics to improve fleet safety.
