LG Seeds’ Top 5 of 2022: Tips from Our Agronomists to Our Growers

Binge-watching YouTube videos is probably not at the top of your priority list.

We get it. You’re a farmer, and you’ve got plenty to keep you busy throughout the year.

But at LG Seeds, we think that visiting our YouTube channel might just be the perfect pastime as you are spending those long hours in the cab of your tractor or combine.

And it could take your farm to the next level.

That’s why our team of agronomists strives to be your partner in the field – from the start of the day till you call it a day. Someone you can count on to provide you with the best tips to make the most of your investment. And throughout 2022, we’ve posted our Agronomy Tip of the Week to help you make the best decisions for your farm.

We’ve compiled our “Top 5” Agronomy Tips from this past year – so without further ado, let the countdown begin…

#5: Preventing Iron Deficiency Chlorosis (IDC) in Soybeans

In this video, agronomist Tim Beninga explains that IDC in soybeans is caused not by a lack of iron in the soil – but by a lack of availability of that iron, due to high calcium carbonates and soluble salts found in some soils. His solutions? Plant cover crops, using a highly-chelated iron product, and of course, choose the best LG Seeds variety for your soil. Check out his tips here.

#4: Preparing for Harvest

LG Seeds agronomist Brian Weihmeir encourages growers to do some quick field scouting as they prepare to harvest their corn in the fall. Evaluating stalk strength and potential stalk rot, as well as shucking back a few ears to evaluate grain quality will help you prioritize which fields to harvest first and which can probably wait.

#3: Herbicide Tips for Soybeans

At LG Seeds, we offer farmers the traits they need to use the herbicides that work best for their soybean fields. Whether they’re using XtendFlex®, Enlist E3®, or older chemistries, agronomist Phil Brunner encourages growers to apply their herbicide of choice in the correct weather conditions and to “get the right product on the right acres.”

#2: Why Can't You Apply Herbicides Later in the Season?

Agronomist Phil Brunner meets us in the field once again and explains why farmers shouldn’t apply post-emergence herbicides to their cornfields later in the growing season. By splitting open a corn stalk and briefly explaining the plant’s anatomy, he shows growers why application in that V4-V6 range can cause problems for the plant later on. Bottom line? Read the label and select the best LG Seeds hybrids for your specific situation.

#1: What to Scout for in Sorghum

Midge in your milo? Topping off our list, we head to South Texas, where agronomist Jorge Guzman explains how to scout for midge in your sorghum fields. This tiny insect lays eggs in fresh sorghum blooms, and the hatched larvae then eat the inside of each grain. Jorge explains how to assess your field, enabling you to make informed IPM decisions.

That’s a wrap on our “Top 5” Agronomy Tips from 2022! Like every growing season, 2022 presented farmers with in-field challenges, and 2023 will present challenges of its own.
