Matt Teply, a Technical Team Agronomist, shares the reality of farming in the high plains.

“Guys out here know that if they ain’t got water, they’re hosed,” says Matt. “There has been so much work and regulation to preserve the water we have left. People think that the only thing we do out here is pump water like crazy. They’re wrong.”

Many water districts impose pumping limits to regulate the amount of water used by agricultural irrigation. Besides that, thousands of irrigated acres have been taken out of production.

“I cover six states. Their environments range in so many ways – from annual rainfall to nighttime temperatures to the growing season length. I spend a lot of time on product placement because of that,” says Matt.

Placing a hybrid in the correct environment requires consideration across many factors; crop rotation, disease presence, and water availability are only a few.

“LG Seeds has an outstanding dryland line-up,” says Matt, referring to the hybrids that do well in the dry conditions of the high plains. “If all placed correctly, my SAM’s have about eight to ten irrigated products, and eight to ten dryland products to choose from.”

The environment can vary greatly In Matt’s area. In order to be selective in placing hybrids, he appreciates the variety of products LG Seeds offers.
