5 Keys to Elevate #Plant2023 With A Seed Ordering Checklist

As mid-harvest season approaches for many regions, now is the best time to gather your 2022 data and start strategizing for 2023.

A seed order checklist is a good starting point for a 2023 plan. Let’s look at the top five ways to set yourself up for success with that checklist:

  1. Understand your soil type/productivity and set realistic yield goals that take into consideration your management styles and soil fertility.

  1. Pick hybrids with trait packages that work in your rotation. Take your previous crop and future crop plans into consideration, as well as pest control traits/practices. Use the LG Seeds Mix Matters Tool to help or consult your local LG Seeds Agronomist.

  1. Select multiple hybrids to spread out your risk. Also, vary your population slightly to account for any environmental stresses. For example, don’t plant everything at 30,000 population: plant some at 28,000 and some at 32,000.

  1. Make a planting order plan, and know which hybrids have the best emergence scores to ensure the most uniform stands next spring. Identify which hybrids will have to stand out in the field longest in the fall during harvest.

  1. Contact your local LG Seeds Sales Representative and place your order early, so you can make sure you have the seed on hand when you need it—and minimize supply/transportation concerns.

Using Harvest to Start your Plan

When preparing to buy seed for 2023, collect all data — from the beginning of the current planting season all the way through harvest. Using that harvest data, evaluate whether your yields aligned with your goals. How did your seed choices for 2022 fare against the challenges from the growing season? Which fields had the most variability? Once you have a clear picture of what worked and what needs tweaking, select hybrids with the appropriate amount of flex, then adjust planting populations accordingly.

What’s important for #plant23?

After reviewing your challenges and yield data from this year, your next step is figuring out which hybrids and trait packages could better fit your fields’ specific needs. Take into account each field’s history – soil type, disease and insect pressure, drainage issues, and overall stress and productivity levels.

To help combat different environmental stresses, always choose multiple hybrids across your acres. For best results, try to keep each hybrid at no more than 25% of your total acreage.
