Unlocking Crop Potential: How to Master the Timing of Potassium Sidedressing

Delivering a joke’s punchline.

Asking your boss for a raise.

Pulling that parachute cord while skydiving.

In all these situations, there is a clear lesson:

Timing is everything.

As a farmer, you're well aware of this reality.

When to plant (and when to replant). When to harvest. When to purchase new equipment. When to trust the weather forecast. And the list goes on and on…

When it comes to sidedressing potassium on your corn acres, the timing of your application is even more important than the rate of application.

Old Data, New Tech

The concept of sidedressing potassium (K) is nothing new. Back in 1948, J.D. Sayre identified that a corn plant's high demand for K uptake begins 28 days after planting (about 10 days before nitrogen demand really ramps up).

That was great information (thanks, J.D.), but your grandpa (or great-grandpa) really had no way of putting that into practice.

Seventy-five years later, things are different, and the methods to efficiently deliver potassium to the corn plant (exactly when it needs it) are well established.

Today's corn hybrids typically have a more extended "peak season" for potassium demand than the ones Grandpa used—starting at about "knee high" and extending through the VT stage.

With modern Y-drop equipment, the ability to meet this demand is available, and trials are proving this system's efficacy.

Y-Drop, Yield Boost

In 2016, trials that utilized modern Y-drop equipment to deliver liquid potassium and nitrogen during peak demand showed an average yield bump of three bushels per acre. And in years where mineralization isn't quite as good, that boost could be even bigger.

Advantage Acre®

So how can you best time your potassium applications and make the most of "feeding" your corn?

It's time to use Advantage Acre® to your… well… advantage.

LG Seeds' field management tool utilizes weather, soil, and seed data to give you the necessary insight to boost yields and optimize your ROI.

And utilizing the Growth Stage Menu on Advantage Acre® will help you get those potassium applications timed out just right—starting in that V3/V4 range and continuing through VT.

Support You Can Take to the Field

A great yield starts with great seed. LG Seeds offers the seed choices you need without the distractions. But remember that cultivating a bumper crop goes well beyond what you put in the ground.

As Tony Vyn, Purdue University Professor of Agronomy, notes: "Growers should not rely too heavily on modern genetics to give them the yields they expect without spending a considerable amount of effort on maintaining nutrient availability throughout the growing season.

That's solid advice. And that's advice LG Seeds is interested in backing up.

LG Seeds is committed to your success—season after season. And that commitment goes well beyond setting you up with the right seed options for your farm—we also offer agronomic advice, data analysis, and support throughout the growing season.

We're here when you need us, including when you make timing decisions for potassium application on your corn acres. That's what makes LG Seed your reliable partner in the field, season after season.
