Versatile and Efficient: How Your Farm May Benefit from Growing Sorghum

Some seed companies specialize in offering varieties for one or two crops.

At LG Seeds, we also specialize—in providing you with unique and reliable solutions for your farm.

That's why, along with our corn and soybean varieties, we also offer quality seed varieties for alfalfa, corn for silage, and sorghum.

A grain grown by farmers for a really long time, sorghum is a versatile crop often used domestically for livestock feed and ethanol production.

And with the United States growing more sorghum than any other country, a robust export market exists for this adaptable crop.

Yet perhaps its most attractive attribute is one that western growers have known for years—it’s more efficient than corn and soybeans at using limited water resources.

Merits of Milo: Drought Mitigation and Other Benefits

Compared to other crops, sorghum is much more water efficient—one reason farmers up and down the Great Plains choose to grow this ancient grain.

And with drought conditions currently affecting much of the country’s cropping decisions, growing something that’s a bit less thirsty may be necessary. This is true not only on the plains but even in portions of the Corn Belt and drought-stricken California.

Sorghum also offers another benefit that many farmers appreciate: flexibility. With a planting window that typically extends a bit later than other crops, sorghum could be a great backup when planting gets delayed.

Growing It: What You Need to Know

Introducing sorghum into your crop rotation may require adjustments. But it's nothing crazy, and your LG Seeds agronomist is always on standby to set you up for success.Sorghum is sometimes an attractive choice because input costs (especially for seed) are often much lower than corn. But growers should note sorghum still has significant fertilizer requirements (especially Nitrogen requirements),  just like corn.

Weed control is an additional factor that must be taken into consideration. Chemistries available for weed control in sorghum are not as flexible as the ones for other crops.

With this knowledge, you and your LG Seeds agronomist can determine the proper seeding rate for your farm and discuss harvest considerations.

After that, all you have to do is pick out the right seed.

The Sorghum Choices You Need—Without the Distractions

As with our corn and soybean varieties, LG Seeds is committed to helping you select the best sorghum seed for you and your farm.

We offer time-tested sorghum varieties that are backed by performance data and are field-proven to consistently deliver a quality crop in diverse and demanding environments.

Whether you are focused on producing grain or forage, we have options that will fulfill the unique needs of your operation: seed variety options, as well as seed treatment solutions that will protect your investment.
