The Resilient Journey of Golden Acres Brand: A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence
Sorghum.
Few crops across the globe have a history as long and glorious as this ancient grain. From its earliest cultivation in East Africa 10,000 years ago to its modern, globally vital applications, this crop has a longstanding legacy.
And just like the grain itself, Golden Acres sorghum seed has a lengthy, impressive history all its own. In the ever-evolving world of agriculture, few brands have weathered the test of time quite like Golden Acres.
The 20th Century: A Legacy Begins
Golden Acres traces its roots back to the Taylor Evans Seed Company. When the brand emerged in 1952, it set a course for innovation and growth in the seed industry, focusing on sorghum hybrids.
After nearly two decades of impressive performance from Golden Acres, Diamond Shamrock acquired it in 1970—a move that set thestage for AgriGenetics’ acquisition of the brand in 1980. This move solidified Golden Acres’ position as a key player in the seed industry.
Mycogen then acquired AgriGenetics in 1992 and inherited the reputed Golden Acres brand. But when Dow AgroSciences acquired Mycogen in the late 1990s, the company quickly opted to exit the sorghum business.
Golden Acres was at a crossroads.
A New Millenium: Ramping Up to The Future
Driven by a passion for agriculture and a vision for the future, the legacy seed brand saw a revival in 1999. When Lou and Regina Buice recognized Golden Acres’ untapped potential, they purchased the brand. Golden Acres Genetics was born, setting up a turning point.
Two years later, Golden Acres flexed its strategic power and acquired the rights to Cargill corn and sorghum products. This strategic move bolstered the brand’s position, and in 2011, Golden Acres Genetics secured the rights to Syngenta sorghum products, as Syngenta exited the sorghum business.
AgReliant Genetics: Acquisition and a Promising Future
In 2015, AgReliant Genetics recognized the brand’s true worth and acquired Golden Acres Genetics—further solidifying Golden Acres’ standing in the agricultural seed industry.
Throughout its long journey, Golden Acres showcased its global presence and commitment.
Today, domestic sales span across 20 territories, and export sales reach multiple countries, including Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, and Korea.
Golden Acres and its legacy of resilience and progress in the sorghum industry is a testament to quality seed that has stood the test of time.
